| ...while I search for
pictures of Carolina, I thought that I'd write/meditate the story of
this music group: |
| The story of "Carolina", a
"cream of the crop" country music group that began musical life as a
house band at a local country music venue (nightclub) in Salisbury, NC,
in 1981. |
| I had returned to
Salisbury in the late summer of 1980 and had opened an electronics
repair shop, Pearl Electronics, but then took a position as service
manager at my brother Marvin's music store (manager then, long before he
bought the business - Salisbury Music House & Conservatory); |
| |
| ...one day, Marvin asked
me if I wanted to play in a house group at a local country music
nightclub; they would provide the piano and there would be a
limited amount of rehearsal involved. For $50 a night (2011=$125).
Not much, but no damn equipment to move and setup, etc. Sure, I
said. ;) |
| |
| ...the owner of the
nightclub, The Foxy Lady, was Carol Peoples (Carol to her friends,
Virginia to others). She eventually married J. D. Hurst, for which
Carolina played for the wedding at J.D.'s farm, though I can't remember
if that was the group's name or it was the original name that Carol gave
us, "The Country Notes" (a name she got from a billboard on the drive to
Atlanta). Carol knew everyone but Marvin and I and arranged a
meeting of all. I don't remember the details, but Smokey
disappeared at some early point, so the group's original members didn't
really include him, since he only attended one or two meetings. |
| |
| ...the original members of
group were Marvin Clark (drums); Bill Miller (guitar/vocals); Gene Long
(bass/vocals);Bobby Hunter (steel guitar/vocals); Joe Moon (acoustic
guitar/vocals); Smokey ? (harmonica/vocals) & Ed Clark (keyboards/vocal
- musical director); |
| |
| ....to be continued (Ed
Clark - 07AUG2011) |
